Conversations with the Coop - Gabriel Haines - CRE8R DAO, Clipto DAO
Primer: What has Crypto Twitter Memelord Gabriel Haines been up to? In this episode of the Conversations with the Coop, he shares with host Crypto Texan his involvement with CRE8R DAO and Clipto DAO. Read on to learn more about these DAOs.
Background
Before crypto, he was also a content creator
He would visit various places that offer hummus in Tel Aviv and do reviews on them
Entering Crypto
Got into crypto in early 2020 because of the huge crash in the markets
The government started to print money and he remembered from his past that Bitcoin was a solution to this problem
Began learning everything about Bitcoin. Learned about Ethereum and the innovation that is happening on it
Started to make video tutorials explaining what these apps were doing. Creating content also helped him to understand them better
The first video he made was on YFI and the Yearn protocol
His Podcast
Was always a big fan of podcasts
Thought that it was fun to start one and to see who would be interested to speak with him
His first guest was Over Analyser
Managed to meet many good people through the podcast:
Loomdart
Fiskantes
Zeus from Olympus DAO
Inspiration Behind His Twitter Videos
💡 Gabriel has been moving towards Twitter videos. Two of his Twitter videos feature him calling out Gary Gensler and Senator Warren
His message is that institutions are failing us and telling us what we should do. A lot of people don’t like that
Goes back to the core ethos of Bitcoin about self-sovereignty over one’s money
Does He Have Any Crypto Twitter Adversaries?
Does not have any
Everyone on Crypto Twitter knows about his bout with Crypto Messiah. Crypto Messiah played along with him and that motivated him to go crazier and crazier
“I called out Banteg for looking at cartoon boobies. I think that it's pretty funny because people have this interesting expectation of finance. It's got to be a suit, you got to be buttoned up. And Banteg, you know, he's kind of breaking that mold.”
- Gabriel Haines
Where Does He Think The Lack Of Trust In Institutions/Government Come From?
People have a sense that they are being shortchanged on many things, even if they can’t necessarily say what they are being shortchanged on
Think that this is just how the system is set up, where elected officials who remained in power for so long that they forgot their mission
Why Is Web3 Inevitable?
With Web3, the incentives are a lot more transparent — people can actually know what other people are holding
It cuts out the middlemen and makes processing a lot faster and cheaper
Saw it in government where politicians create bills to promote the companies that they are invested in
What Were Some Of The Biggest Stories That Propelled Web3 To Where It Is Today?
Elon was a big crypto shill this in 2021
The technology is improving — different layer 1s, devs can deploy apps cheaply, etc.
People don’t necessarily want to hold dollars or they recognize that dollars are not the best way to store their wealth
What Other Things Is He Experimenting With?
He is using Ethereum, AVAX, Arbitrum, and Polygon
Does not feel that Ethereum has abandoned its users. Thinks that it is about Su Zhu talking up his bags
Over time, people will migrate to Arbitrum, Optimism, etc. once more apps become available/incentive programs are launched
Clipto DAO
Origins
A crypto version of Cameo
Users will be able to request personalized content from their favourite creators, pay them in crypto, and receive the content as a NFT
Was doing short-form videos and people were asking whether if he could go on Cameo. He signed up with Cameo but did not receive a reply
“So that's kind of the classic crypto story. Your bank account shuts you down, Paypal doesn't let you open the account, so you've got to go the crypto route.”
- Gabriel Haines
There were enough people who were interested in this idea. Got into a Discord and started working
Had a launch party at Williamsburg Hotel in New York on January 3rd at 7:00
It will be launched on Polygon
What Personalities Have Reached Out To Contribute?
Udi Wertheimer, Have Fun Staying Poor, and Spottie WiFi
Bob Burnquist, a professional skater from the Tony Hawk era
Terrence Boyd, a professional soccer player
CRE8R DAO
A marketing DAO that he helped start ~6 months ago
Has a bunch of content creators that help create content for different projects within DeFi, NFT, etc.
The protocol pays the DAO and the DAO distributes the funds directly to content creators
There are not many DAOs that are focused on providing services to other DAOs
“Let's say I wanted to start a regular marketing company right now. It's very hard to coordinate with people across different time zones over different countries. How do you pay these people? What currencies do they accept? That in itself is quite difficult, so having the ability to transfer funds and value across internationally very quickly is a big driver of this as well.”
- Gabriel Haines
The innovation in CRE8R DAO was made possible by:
A multi-sig
The ability to move ERC-20 tokens
Coordinape for payment
The BRICK Token
The BRICK token would be deployed on Mainnet and holders would be airdropped tokens on different chains, depending on who the clients are
When clients pay CRE8R DAO, they take a portion of the payment and create a liquidity black hole for them. This helps clients secure liquidity
The token will be deployed on various chains
The CRE8R Token
Creators would receive some CRE8R tokens for working on various projects
Incentivizes creators to continue creating content
His Involvement With Index Coop
Was involved at the start of the project — attending all the meetings, doing interviews, creating content
Had the Silver Owl role
What Were Some Of His Misses In 2021?
Didn’t take enough profit and held on to tokens for too long
Had held a bunch of ETH in SharedStake. The team ended up as scammers and rugged the token
Cobie wrote a piece on the Attention Economy. He discusses that it may not matter if an asset has fundamentals, because in this space, things will blow up and then crash
What Do Memes Mean To Him In This Space?
Memes can mean many things:
A narrative that pushes a token
Him making a video about Gary Gensler
“I think it is important to embrace the meme and to let the meme guide you in many ways.”
- Gabriel Haines
Thinks that memes are very important
Goes into a video with the mindset of being a football coach/sergeant
What Is The Future Outlook Of Crypto?
Better retail experience and user interfaces
What Is Crypto Texan Most Excited For The New Year?
Index Coop has a huge pipeline of products:
The Gonna Make It Index — partnering with Bankless for this product. Lemonade helped put it together. It consists of smaller cap, innovative DeFi protocols
JPEG Index — if they can figure out the liquidity for it
Stablecoin Index
Hopes to see the growth of L2s and Coinbase enabling direct withdrawals to L2s
Looking out for the Eth 2 merge
What Does His Wife Think Of His Videos?
Thinks that it is ridiculous
Started making fun of his videos on her Twitter
She’s supportive of his work
If He Is Head Of Memes At Index Coop, What Would He Do?
Index Coop has been quite good at memes
Thinks that unincentivized TVL would be a good meme
Thinks that Index Coop should embrace more ridiculous types of indexes
As Index Coop’s products are more focused on TradFi rather than degens, the memes are more subtle and for a different audience
