Crypto Sapiens - Decentralized Web Sharing with Chris Castig, Co-founder of Console
Primer: The signal-to-noise ratio of Twitter, Discord, and Telegram is too low. What if there is a better alternative instead? In this episode of Crypto Sapiens, host Humpty Calderon introduces us to Chris Castig, the Co-Founder of Console, a group chat platform where communities can co-create magic.
Background
Grew up playing music and majored in music
Back then, the only way to get music was through a records store
Napster came along, enabling P2P music sharing
Did a Master in New Media, focusing on distributed system culture
During his studies, the Bitcoin white paper was released
Went for his first Web3 summit in 2017
His Journey Towards Console
Have always been interested in startups and creating
Taught himself how to code
Gave himself a deadline of 30 days to come up with a project
They created a company, called One Month, out of that project
Left the company 2 years ago and went into Web3
Realized that Web3 is using centralized Web2 platforms like Twitter and Discord
Console
Introduction
A group chat platform where communities can co-create magic
Adheres to Web3 principles in their tech stack
Users own their identity, username, and password. Their data is encrypted using Signal Protocol, a privacy protocol
Will be gradually open-sourcing their code to uphold transparency
The issue with Discord and Telegram is that they are noisy. This prevents him from connecting with the people he wants to connect with
Console is currently in beta
Have a team of 8 devs and a third-party security team that audits their work
Their Vision
Working towards making Console composable
Many Web3 tools like Gnosis Safe and Snapshot are composable. Hence, they are able to integrate them easily
Working on ways to make data more integrated with the chat (e.g. while in chat, you can get treasury updates from a graphical interface)
Will be creating additional modules that developers can add to the platform
Communities Using Console
For their beta, they are looking for communities that are mission-driven/have a reason for existing
Have artists and musicians using the platform to engage with their community
In Console, you can list upcoming events, voting, etc.
Users can go to their website and select an option to start a community
They will review the applications and get in touch with you
Thoughts On Decentralized Social
The next big thing will be identity
ENS is one of the leaders in the identity space
Console has integrated with ENS
Excited about Farcaster in the decentralized social space
Lens is doing something interesting where your social graph is on the blockchain
Someone Influential To His Crypto Journey
Balaji — His work on the Network State is at the forefront
Kevin Kelly — Wrote a book called Out of Control that predicted the decentralized Web3 world
