Ivan on Tech - Build on Aavegotchi with Coder Dan
Primer: Join Ivan as he interviews Dan, aka Coderdan, who is the co-founder and lead summoner of Aavegotchi and CEO of Pixelcraft Studios. Find out what Aavegotchi is all about and do read on to the end as he drops some important tips on how a beginner can participate in this global gaming phenomenon.
Who is Coder Dan?
Lead summoner of Aavegotchi, CEO of Pixelcraft studios
Been building Aavegotchi for about a year - 1st anniversary in 7th July
Participated in ETH global hackathon in May 2020
Made a project called Yield Hero where you can redirect the interest from your token to a creator in the space
Further explored the idea of value staked NFT with on-chain metadata with Jesse (co-founder of Aavegotchi with Dan)
What is Aavegotchi?
The idea of having a pet and interacting with it, participating in the community and having different events to earn XP
Have to interact with your Aavegotchi daily so that the Kinship will increase
Why level up your Aavegotchi?
Rarity farming - a competition between all the summoned Aavegotchis where the highest rarity score will earn some GHST token (the native token of Aavegotchi) right into the Aavegotchi NFT, not to the owner
Experience XP - another on-chain trait that can increase over time
Each Aavegotchi can equip wearables, which are ERC-1155s.
Wearables can be purchased or won through raffles
Equipping wearables increase the rarity score of Aavegotchi
Aavegotchi has 6 different traits, and these traits will change depending on how you interact with it
Energy, brain size, aggressiveness, spookiness, eye shape and eye colour
Traits can be improved as the Aavegotchi levels up
There is also an interest-generating token (Aave's aToken) staked inside each Aavegotchi, which is its spirit force
Bid-to-earn auction
Had an initial trial of a new bid-to-earn auction where the players earned more than 70,000 GHST just from buying NFT
A bid-to-earn auction is essentially a game of chicken where you put in a big in an auction for a one-off NFT
However, if you are outbidded, you end up getting a small percentage of the bid back, up to a cap of 10% of the bid value
The amount of NFT spent in the auction was at least doubled compared to a first-come-first-served system
This bid-to-earn auction model will reduce the incentive to flip
Upcoming events
Going to do 2 more auctions that are way bigger than the initial trial
In Aug 2021, an auction of 12,000 Haunt 2 portals (portals are where Aavegotchis are summoned) will be held at the same time
Right after that will be the sale of the metaverse land (REALM parcel) that can generate yield that can be farmed. Inspired by Farmville and Clash of Clans
Will have a hackathon like a game jam where developers can build something and win real prizes
Pixelcraft Studio will also sponsor game developers with a bundle of NFT prizes with GHST tokens and wearables, so they can reward the players however they want
The more players they have for their games, the more they will get sponsored
The vision is to create this mini-game economy, kind of like a skinned version of steam, based on Aavegotchi and on-chain traits
Currently working on having side views of the Aavegotchis
Most NFT are just one-sided, so a mini-game developer will be able to play with all 4 different sides when development is ready
The metaverse REALM land parcel
REALM parcel will earn a little yield, called Alchemica, if you go to the parcel daily.
Alchemica can be spent to improve the parcel by building other NFT/installations in order to earn the yield faster
REALM parcel also has social uses and you can have in-game chats with friends
Serves as a portal to other DApps by an installation of 3rd party DApps on the land parcel
Will be able to use an SDK to program interaction within the installation, similar to interacting with an NPC in the game to do a swap (Quickswap or Uniswap will be used in the backend)
Reasons for Aavegotchi to be on Matic network
Aavegotchi is an interactive NFT, hence it will have to be on a side chain or on a layer 2 solution to reduce gas fees when transacting
Initally started on Ethereum because that is where most of the NFTs are located
"And literally that night as we were getting ready to launch, gas was spiking up to like 1000 gwei. Right? So our users were gonna be paying like $500 just to summon an Aavegotchi and we're like, we can't do that. We're gonna get rekted, everyone's gonna get rekted - it's gonna be a total mess."
- Coder Dan
If they build their own chain, will also lose interoperability with other NFT projects in the form of partnerships
Had done partnerships with Cometh and Dino swap (new farm on polygon) and it is only possible because all of them are on the same chain
Attracting developers to build on Aavegotchi
Mini-games on Aavegotchi
All the assets are on-chain, including the images using smart contract memory
It is easy for any developer to build projects with Aavegotchi
Already have an active community building mini-games
These mini-games can be played with your Aavegotchi, and it can be used to level up your Aavegotchi
Pixelcraft Studios actually hired 2 full-time devangelists to work out the infrastructure, the management and help the community utilise fully what had been created
Boiler template
Have an official Aavegotchi contract on Github
Uses a new upgradable contract standard EIP 2535 -called the diamond standard - where developers can use to develop mini-games easily
The SVG image is already on-chain, so the developer can just call up the function and it will return the Aavegotchi based on a token ID
Max size for each contract is 24kb - anything larger will be better to put in IPFS
The challenge for them now is to get another template, which can teach the developers how to put up the games onto the game server
Games are on game servers to prevent end-users from hacking the leaderboard in the mini-games
A lot of developers came from another field using another language but phaser is the game engine, so had to learn a new language of programming
How to participate in Aavegotchi as a beginner?
Hold some GHST, stake into Aavegotchi staking contract and start earning FRENS
FRENS can be converted into raffle tickets
There will be at least 2, probably 3, raffles upcoming that are related to Haunt 2 portals and REALM parcel
WIll be giving away an unprecedented 20% of the supply of both of those via NFT raffles
"Look, there are more pumpermentals in this space than anything else, and you look at things like HEX and other things that did 5,000x. If people were a bit too smart, and they analyse it too much, they miss out on the 5,000x. And we've seen many times when people analyse too much. But of course, you may get rug pulled as well, and lose everything. So it's risk-reward."
- Ivan
Users can sell the raffle tickets, or play the APY game (APY around 50-60% or higher)
Raffles are totally random and verifiable, done by chainlink VRF
Some items that are won in the raffles can sell for 80k to 100k
