On The Other Side ep 51 - Media as the fourth estate w/ Steph Alinsug (cryptohun3y)
Primer: Media could be used to support decision making in DAOs. In this episode of On The Other Side, host Chase Chapman invites Steph Alinsug of Seed Club to share her thoughts on decentralized media and Media as the fourth estate.
Background
Onboarded to Web3 last fall
Was running her own boutique branding studio
Is a community organizer and activist for social and racial justice
Heard about DAOs and community tokens
Became excited with how Web3 might create new opportunities for community building
Getting Into The Media Team At Seed Club
Her approach to branding has always been at the intersection of storytelling and community building
Was recruited into Seed Club to create content
Her Piece On Decentralized Media
Web3 has the urge to decentralize everything
In most cases, it doesn’t work well
Think of media as a pyramid:
Content creation at the top
Content curation at the middle
Content distribution at the bottom
Need to have a strong value proposition set at the beginning
Downstream effects is that you only have a small subset of people creating the content — the content being produced has high alignment with the brand/community
The idea is to move down the stack and allow your community to broadcast your narrative
Boys Club’s community is a good example of a community participating in decentralized distribution
Forefront has a community member that curates links that are sent out in their newsletter
Media As The Fourth Estate
Can look at it within the American context:
Executive branch
Legislative branch
Judicial branch
There’s a 4th branch, media, that supports the state
At the DAO level, there’s a huge opportunity to use media as a way to support to decision making ability of the DAO
Media Influences On Decision Making
Saw it in the 2016 election
Can use media as a strategy within DAOs to help them make the best decision that they can
Some will view it as propaganda, but storytelling has been part of our human history
Anytime we are engaging with a piece of media or some news, we are participating in some form of curation
Some think that it will increase polarization in our society and create more echo chambers. However, we can participate in different DAOs with different versions of ourselves
The Inevitable Descent Into American Anarchism
A theory by Balaji
Everyone is moving into smaller and smaller echo chambers, and finding themselves into greater polarization
After being onboarded to crypto last fall, she interacted with people from different countries, time zones, and culture
The people that she chose to collaborate with are aligned with the same values even though they differ on race, class, social, and emotional life experiences
“We're all individual storytellers, both of our own experiences and of the communities that we're a part of.”
