On The Other Side ep 54 - An unstructured conversation on morality, internet art, and cancel culture w/ jayislate
Primer: Jayislate is a stream of consciousness. In this episode of On The Other Side, he discusses anthropology, Web3 and other subcultures, taking back our power and attention from AI, among many other interesting topics. Don’t miss out on it!
Background
An anthropologist
Is an artist
A DAO contributor
Has a Substack, but it’s not really a newsletter, but a cultural report
His Substack
It’s more an anthropological collection of a subculture
Trying to record the why and the what behind the different projects
Important to have a bird’s eye view to see the connections
Is an obsessively curious person. Have always been searching for cool stuff
Overlap Between Web3 And Other Subcultures
His focus has been art-driven. In New York, most people are part of the “scene”
Art movements and groups are overlapping with one another, making them loosely connected with one another
Subcultures have in-groups and out-groups
Crypto has created the death of the town square. People don’t want to be around everybody
We are in the digital age where it’s post-identity and post-individualism
Subcultures Taking In People
The internet is manifesting itself in real life
“The internet kind of controls the world. And it manifests a lot of what happens in the world.”
- Jayislate
Post-COVID, certain groups have pushed back on work politics and identity politics but still have progressive ideals
The internet is like a hive mind of connectivity
Many from crypto Twitter came from 4chan. They reappropriate memes to create new meaning in them
Anyone involved in crypto should listen to New Models
Milady uncancelled itself. Moving into an era where cancel culture is dead and where there is the freedom to have ideas that could be wrong, bad, or potentially offensive
This allows people to push the boundaries and experiment
An Uncensorable Internet
Starting to see ideological contradictions — utilizing the blockchain as it is uncensorable but making sure that things are sterilized, clean, and safe
The Dark Side Of Web3
Have to think of basic human rights
Best way to prepare for the future is to push people to think critically
People do not fit into the boxes that are presented to them. They are more fluid than that
At the end of the day, the question to ask is who has the power and the right to tell somebody else what’s right or wrong
Taking Back Our Power And Attention From AI
Don’t have to be angry all the time from what one sees on social media
Have to step out of one’s comfort zone and talk to people who are different from yourself
Motivated to start an anthropological project that surveys and records all these
On Interesting Stuff
Things have become stale
People are searching for the intersections of interesting ideas
Have to surround yourself with interesting people
Came across the term heaven banning — the idea of someone being banned from the internet and placed in an exact copy of where they are in, with AI bots tuned to their exact beliefs, and creating an echo chamber for eternity
Important to create spaces for open discussions instead of shutting down an argument
Token-gating allows you to create the beliefs and rights and wrongs for your community
You can seek out communities that you identify with. You can even have multiple different identities that operate in different senses
Monetization Models Of The Internet
Crypto and Web3 are focused on curation and filtering right now
This happens in the real world with ads and graffiti
Processing The Environment And Making Statements
There’s a difference between:
Processing something and then saying it means something to you
It makes sense and you want to make something that you want other people to see
Work can be made without having any meaning to them as well
Optimistic Take For The Future Of The Internet
The internet is a place where people can share any idea pretty freely and it cannot be censored
Where Can People Find Him
