The Metaverse Podcast - Meta Identity, with Gmoney
Primer: Gmoney is a prolific collector in the NFT space. After seeing the light of what NFTs could be, he has become a passionate advocate for all things NFTs, convincing crypto natives after crypto natives of the value of NFTs. He shares his background, his thoughts, and what he's up to next with Jamie Burke on this episode of The Metaverse Podcast.
Background
Prolific collector
Helping brands to navigate NFTs
Came from TradFi. Have been a professional equity trader for 15 years
Got into crypto in 2017. Was convinced that blockchain tech would change the world. Saw the Dotcom bubble as an analogue to crypto
Going Down The DeFi Rabbit Hole
In March 2020, he started to buy crypto again when Jerome Powell said he was going to buy everything
Started to look around and came across Aave. Was astounded by it
Went deep into the DeFi rabbit hole
Had to put his money at risk to try out DeFi. Still went ahead with it because he thinks that this is the future
"And, you know, the first time I used Aave was like, my oh shit moment, I was like, this is going to change the world. And you know, I went down the DeFi rabbit hole, was doing yield farming and just like relearning everything, listening to podcasts, reading for hours for the majority of my day." - Gmoney
The same thing applies to NFTs. There are smart people who still think that they are JPEGs and art
Entering The NFT Sector
Entered the NFT sector in August 2020
During the first day of the quarantine, he bought a PlayStation
Have not played a video game for over 10 years. Downloaded Fortnite and started playing with two of his best friends and one of their nephews, a 12 year old kid
The 12 year old kid asked him what skins he bought in Fortnite. Observed that the younger generation is willing to spend on in-game cosmetic items. Extrapolated that once these kids have discretionary income in the future, they would be accustomed to spending on digital assets
In the NFT space, he observed that the most experienced NFT collectors had CryptoPunks as their profile pictures
"I was like the price I think of these JPEGs, which are not only just a symbol of status, but also like a symbol of knowledge, right? Like, if you own a CryptoPunk, you're OG and you get it and you've been around for a while." - Gmoney
Human behaviour to establish some sort of social hierarchy by owning a CryptoPunk, even though it happens behind the computer screen
His NFT Investments
His top 3 collections:
CryptoPunks
Chromie Squiggle
Singularity
Minted a couple of CrypToadz weeks ago because he found the community strong
Is very disciplined in his investment. Thinks he has some of the best assets in the NFT space that will retain value over the next 10-20 years. Does not solely focus on returns, but on the risk of holding something that does not pans out
Is not concerned with day-to-day price dips. Believes that we are still early and the long-term trend is up
People who would have sold their CryptoPunks because it is life-changing money would have already sold them. Hence, the current holders are people who don't necessarily need punks for liquidity
"Like, if you have $100 million sitting in an alien, chances are you have a lot of liquidity, right? You're not selling that alien at a fire sale price. So that dynamic really changes like if you want to buy it, the deal is paying a little bit of a premium, like that's the best deal you're going to get." - Gmoney
A few lenders in the crypto space have approached him to offer him loans against his punk. 6 months ago, these things were considered worthless
As the play-to-earn space grows, assets will become valued based on the expected cash flows generated over time
His Gmoney Persona
Considers himself an advocate for NFTs
Gmoney was a nickname he always had
His name begins with the letter G
Always had a knack for making money and doing entrepreneurial things
Pitched NFTs to crypto natives who thought that NFTs were the dumbest thing in the world. After his pitch, their thoughts on NFTs changed
Was at dinner with 6-7 crypto natives at the night of the Beeple Auction. Managed to convince all of them to take part in the auction
Decided to use technology/Twitter to his advantage and increase his reach/impact. Able to put concepts in layman's terms for people to understand
What's Next For Him
Started a podcast called The Cutting Edge with Gmoney
Airs live on Twitter spaces every wednesday at 7 PM eastern
Poap issued for those that listened live
Will be recorded and posted on YouTube, Spotify, and other podcasting services
