Zima Red ep 121: Ado & Yas - Galaxy Fight Club: Metaverse Super Smash Bros
Primer: There are many PFP projects in the space. These projects generally lack utility. Galaxy Fight Club enables these NFTs to be used in their cross-IP PVP game. Ado and Yas share how their game works and its features in this episode of the Zima Red podcast.
Background
Yas
Studied econometrics and operations research
Decided to go into marketing
Found out about NFTs in 2021 due to Gary Vee
Saw Ado was hiring and joined Galaxy Fight Club
Ado
Came from a consulting background
A few years ago, he moved into traditional mobile gaming
Started looking into the Metaverse in 2020
Started Galaxy Fight Club in 2021
Initial Thoughts On The Metaverse
Ado
When he first heard it, he was skeptical
Could not tell the difference between an open world game/sandbox game with the Metaverse
NFTs changed his perspective as it allows digital assets to be owned by people
NFTs enable the possibility of the Metaverse
Yas
Was skeptical
Have been following Gary Vee for years. Was easy to resonate with what he was saying
Was a huge gamer in his teenage years and could understand the concept of digital asset ownership
Galaxy Fight Club
A cross-IP PVP game designed for the NFT space
Players log in with different NFT assets (e.g. Animetas, Bored Ape, etc.) to play inside their game
Is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game
3 vs 3
Each match lasts ~5 minutes
Team that gets the most kills win
Bringing NFTs Into Galaxy Fight Club
Started this project in August 2021
Back then, there were a lot of PFP projects without actual use cases
Ado realized the opportunity of tapping into the existing communities/collections and allowing them to play against each other in a fun game
Partnered with:
CyberKongz
Animetas
Wicked Craniums
Illuvium
Holders of these NFTs can log in to their game and be able to play with their characters
Factors Affecting Gameplay
There are differences in stats
Character strength is determined by:
Rarity of the NFT
Average price of the collection it was from
Also take into account specific traits:
Certain characters might have faster movement speed
Clothing items and eye traits may give in-game bonuses
Will The Rarest Bored Ape Dominate Everyone?
Their game is reliant on teamwork
It’s viable for a team that has great teamwork to outsmart and win against stronger characters
The stats and power differential between NFTs are limited
Why Did They Focus On Cross-IP As Their Go-To-Market Strategy?
Thinks that cross-IP is more fun for gamers
Being able to tap into existing communities enables them to bring a larger audience to their platform
They have their own collection of 10,000 Galaxy Fighters as well
Overall Meta Of The Game
Currently focusing on teamwork and gameplay skills
In the future, they may add strengths and weaknesses of different collections
There’s strategy to their game:
Obstacles to hide behind
Tunnels to approach the enemy side
Life-steal on melee weapons
Ranged weapons are weaker when used on melee enemies
Weapons with AOE effects or does burst damage
Weapons
Did a weapon drop on November
Weapons are on-chain NFTs
Two different weapons can be merged together to get a stronger random weapon
Death Robots
Death Robots are another race in their world
They are one of the strongest races
They were dropped to holders who collected 1 Galaxy Fighter from each race
What Makes Web3 Games Special?
Ado
It enables digital asset ownership
It enables people to monetize gaming
“Being able to own your assets is a huge game changer, because you not only truly own your assets, even if the game company itself shuts down the game one day, you still have these assets on chain, and you can continue the game yourself as a community.”
- Ado
Yas
A more liquid market for in-game skins and items
Will People End Up Farming Games Instead Of Playing For Fun?
Web3 games are currently not fun to play
Eventually, this will change when Web3 games become high quality, fun, and is able to generate income
Don’t think that those 2 things contradict each other
Games have to be fun first, in order to generate demand for in-game items
Does Galaxy Fight Club Have Play-To-Earn Aspects?
When players win a match, their team has a chance to get key fragments
Key fragments are ERC-1155s
Fragments can be combined into a key
Keys could be used to open loot boxes containing weapons, armor, etc.
There are also battle royales:
Players pay a fixed price to enter tournaments
Winners win the entire prize pool
Will introduce weekly tournaments with prizes in GCOIN, their native currency, or ETH
What Challenges Are Web3 Gaming Facing Right Now?
The reputation of Web3 games as ponzi schemes
Web3 games are not fun
Galaxy Fight Club In 5-10 Years
The future Metaverse will have a number of different platforms
Wants Galaxy Fight Club to be known as a platform for fast-paced PVP gameplay
Challenges Of Being A Founder
Ado
Very easy for founders to do what is trendy at the moment
Important to understand why you are starting something and the direction you’re going
Founders have to be realistic about whether they can deliver what’s on their roadmap
Starting a company in the Web3 space is more difficult as you are directly in touch with the community and have to be accountable to them
Yas
Most founders do not know how to market their project
A lot of founders are focusing on exclusiveness instead of inclusiveness — buying an NFT is already a large barrier to entry
Single Favourite NFT
Ado
His CryptoPunk
Yas
His VeeFriend Bubble Gum Spectacular
What Excites Them In The Web3 World Today?
Ado
Art
Finds generative art super interesting
Most Controversial Thought
Yas
People are living their Web3 life as if it was their real life and they are doing things that would get them into trouble in real life
Made him appreciate real life
If They Could Improve Something In The Space
Ado
People to pay more attention to the underlying product of a project instead of hype
Yas
Having a funnel to onboard people
People to stop making fun of newbies entering the space
NFT Ecosystem In 3 Years
Yas
A larger user base
Some of the current blue chip projects becoming worthless
Fewer rugs and soft rugs
Ado
Most of the top-tier projects today fade into insignificance
“Because as a PFP project, there are only so many activities you can do, there's only so much community building you can do. Once you kind of do all those things like treasure hunts, all that sort of stuff on the roadmap, you kind of run out of things to do.”
- Ado
There has to be some utility for NFT projects to last:
Could be a game
Access to real life perks
